DAYNE COYNE BIOGRAPHY
Dayne has been producing creative work for several decades - mainly art, music and writing - but most of it has remained out of public reach. Anglo-Irish, and born in Hull, he studied chemistry-with-geology at St Andrews University in Scotland. He has lived in several cities; currently in Nottingham. Dayne is 57 years old; the picture of him here is when he was about 54.
For a few years in the late 1970s Dayne worked as an illustrator for the report of the Perth High Street Excavation which was being compiled by the University of St Andrews' Medieaval History Department; and also as an exhibition designer for the university's Archaeology department. After that he used these skills to help with the designing of an exhibition for Amnesty International [as it was called then]. Also for short while he involved himself in community arts in Leeds, for instance drawing murals [mainly of giant planets] and he helped with the set design, lighting and sound effects for an amateur theatre production. For a short while he did life modelling, at a couple of venues in Notingham.
Dayne has some interest in costume and make-up as well, and is using this in producing some tongue-in-cheek video characterisations in which he "stars". Occasionally he has designed and altered clothing, particularly male underwear, but has never presented these designs on a professional scale. He has also designed the labels for herbal cosmetic products of his own formulating, and has designed a few banners for or with Stuart, who used to produce them. When Dayne was a tutor/ lecturer in adult further education, he often made resources for teaching, and also made use of drawing and painting when teaching people with learning difficulties.
Some years ago he and Stuart produced a small gay fanzine dealing with male underwear. It was stylish and understated and involved art and photography. Both of them [among others] modeled for it and both were photographers too. Dayne also did some simple graphics for it. Stuart and he also ran a small shop in Nottingham, at the turn of the millennium, selling second-hand books, New-Age items and the like. Dayne designed and created the exterior of the shop.
Poster, booklet cover and leaflet design interest Dayne, and he has produced several of each of these. Recently he became interested in digital photography and computer manipulation of images, as well as in computer video - but he still enjoys the more traditional activities of sketching, drawing and painting. There is an artistic side to gardening and to working an allotment, which he finds fulfilling.
